Melvin Haymon is a native of Vernon Parish and has lived there for over the last forty years. Mr. Haymon was elected to the Vernon Parish Police Jury in 1996. He is presently serving his sixth term of office on the Vernon Parish Police Jury.
During his tenure with the Police Jury, Mr. Haymon has served as Vice-President for three years and the Parish President for two years. He is currently serving as the Chairman of both the Ways & Means Committee and
He is a PJAL Past President.
Mr. Haymon was elected as Mayor of New Llano in 1978–1982. While serving as Mayor, he helped start the Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Haymon is very active in the community and has served on several boards in the parish, such as the Vernon Community Action Council Board, Vernon Parish Council on Aging Board, Northwestern University Board, and the Covered Arena Board. He is a member of the "Visions for Vernon” group and also the "Fort Polk Forward” group. Both groups were formed to foster community unity and focus on issues that directly affect the quality of life for residents of Vernon Parish, Fort Polk soldiers, their families and the civilians who support them.
He is a graduate of Leesville High School, and a member of Family Worship Center. He has been a self-employed business owner of several businesses over the last 39 years. Mr. Haymon and wife Barbara, have three daughters, 11 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.
