The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has
approved new rules to reduce the cost of phone and video calls for incarcerated
individuals and their families. In line with the 2022 Martha Wright-Reed Fair
and Just Communications Act, the FCC has set new, lower price caps for calling
rates. Effective January 1, 2025, phone calls will be capped at 6¢
per minute in prisons and large jails, and 7¢ per minute in medium-sized jails,
with slightly higher rates for smaller jails. Video call rates will be capped
at 16¢ per minute for prisons and between 11¢ and 25¢ per minute for
jails. See the FCC Announcement.
