State Funding Available To Implement Road Safety Improvement Projects

The Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) is coordinating the new Louisiana Local Road Safety Program in cooperation with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.  Organizational meetings
designed to introduce the Local Road Safety Program to anyone interested in promoting road safety in their community and in applying for funds to implement safety improvement projects are scheduled for May 15, 16, 17 and 22.  The training classes which are also scheduled for May and June 2006 are designed to provide participants with enough information to develop project ideas and complete the applications.  All projects must be sponsored by the agency or authority (city or parish) which owns and maintains the roads which will be impacted. We encourage participation by city and parish engineers, road supervisors or superintendents, public works management, law enforcement and elected officials.  The state funding per project is $500,000 and there is $3-5 million dollars available annually. We are encouraging low cost safety improvements which will be discussed thoroughly in the classes.  Registration information for the both the organizational meetings.  The applications for the safety improvement projects will be available on LTAP's website by the end of May.
